VORTEX

What Is The Vortex?

The Vortex is where we hang.  To be honest, we're a bunch of movie buffs around here and we took the name from one of our favorites, "Sydney White"! In the movie, Sydney goes off to college and tries to join the sorority that her late mother was in.  She soon finds out that she doesn't quite fit in with her new "sisters" and is kicked out of the house.  Just down the road is a run down shack known around campus as the Vortex.  This is a place where everyone is welcome regardless of what they look like, who they've been or what they've done.  That's exactly who we hope to be here.  We try to be a place where everyone is welcome regardless of whether you fit in anywhere else or not.

What Do We Do?

We're so glad you asked.  We try to meet twice a week during the school year and once a week during the summer months.  Our primary meeting happens on Sunday evening from 4:30-6:30 here at the church. We usually play a game together, fellowship over a meal together, and then head up to the vortex for a devotion and some discussion about upcoming events.  We try to plan all sorts of things.  We look for ways to serve in our community, plan trips for spiritual renewal, and find things to do for fellowship and fun.

During the school year we meet on Wednesday nights too.  This is called BREAKOUT. We watch a movie clip or a clip from a TV show and discuss the themes as it concerns our everyday lives and spiritual lives.  We also use this night to practice our puppet ministry.  Those who wish to volunteer in the puppet ministry definitely need to come hang with us on Wednesdays!

MEETING TIMES

If you miss UMYF, catch us here online on the UMYF LIVE page.

Methodist Ball (A.K.A. Meth Ball)

OBJECT: In a baseball like fashion, try to score as many runs as possible.  The team with the most runs after 4 innings WINS!

PLAY: The game plays like Baseball and Dodgeball.  Balls are soft and of all different shapes and sizes

OFFENSE:

  1. You must hit the ball pitched to you. Once you've hit a ball, you may run to any base of your choosing.  All 3 bases must be tagged before you return home. Once you make it home, you've successfully scored.
  2. 3 strikes and you're out. You're out if your ball is caught in the outfield. If you're running from one base to another, the outfielder can tag you or throw the ball at you to get you out.  If you catch it, you score and return home.  If you attempt to catch it, then drop it, you are out.
  3. If a base is overthrown at anytime, you can run.
  4. Once you are on base, you do not have to run.  Bases may be occupied by more than one offender, but never more than three. If there are three people on base at any time (shared or otherwise) everyone must run on the next hit.
  5. If a hit ball lands fair, then rolls foul, the ball plays fair...regardless of where it goes foul at.

DEFENSE:

  1. All balls remain at the piters mound unless in play.  Pitcher may choose any ball of his liking to pitch.  All pitches must be underhand.
  2. Outfielders can catch the "hit" ball to get a batter out. If a ball is hit on the ground, you may pick the ball up and tag out the runner.  You can also throw the ball at the runner to tag him out.  All throws must strike the runner below the neck to be valid. Once a runner reaches any base, she is safe.
  3. Once a ball is in the outfield, it remains there until it tags a runner out. Once it tags a runner out, it is returned to the pitchers mound.
  4. Once a runner is on base, the defender playing the base is not aloud to hold the ball unless she has no other option.  If there is no other option, she must tag a runner from another base.  If, and only if, there are no other runners occupying the other bases, she may then tag any runner on her base, but that runner must be thrown out
  5. No defender may hold more than one ball at anytime unless there are more balls than defenders in the outfeild.
  6. If you are holding a ball and catch another ball to get a batter out, you must drop the first ball before cathing the batted ball.  Once the ball is caught, you may throw it back to the pitchers mound and grab up the original held ball and tag a runner with it.
  7. Balls hit by an offensive player are not player specific.  They may be used to tag any runner out.
